Shelter Island is a quiet island town located between the North and South Forks of Long Island. The island is accessible only by car ferry or boat, which preserves the town’s reputation as a haven for rest, relaxation and seclusion. But despite this laid-back vibe, there’s plenty to explore, including the island’s beautiful beaches, hiking trails, incredible restaurants and nearby North Fork wineries. Need some help exploring the area? As an established car service on Shelter Island NY, we’ve put together a few tips below to help make your travel easier.
Located about 90 miles east of Manhattan, Shelter Island is a laid-back community that’s perfect for those seeking a peaceful getaway from the city. While it’s not technically part of the Hamptons, it’s a popular destination for those exploring the North or South Fork. The bay beaches are a big draw for their pristine sand and shallow swimming areas (great for families). The island also offers some of the best dining in the Northeast, so it’s well worth the trip if you’re exploring everything the area has to offer.
Crescent Beach and Wades Beach are the most popular public beaches on Shelter Island with seasonal lifeguards and comfort stations. Shell Beach is a quieter, more secluded option with no lifeguards.
Shelter Island is a short trip to the famed North Fork wine trail, so consider a guided wine tour to explore the many wineries and vineyards in Greenport, Southold and beyond.
The Mashomack Preserve is a must-visit for nature lovers, offering 2,350 acres of preserved land, wildlife and walking trails. Sylvester Manor is another popular option. Additionally, roads throughout Shelter Island are fairly flat, making it easy to explore the island by bike.
Shelter Island has a lively food scene, offering everything from high-end dining to casual eateries. You’ll find numerous options along Ferry Road (Rt. 114). For an amazing waterfront view, head over to Sunset Beach Hotel & Restaurant on Shore Road (Rt. 42).
There are several places to stay on Shelter Island, from luxury resorts to charming bed & breakfasts. Popular hotels include the Pridwin Hotel, Ram's Head Inn and Sunset Beach Hotel. For a B&B vibe, check out the Shelter Island House, built in the 1800s.
For more things to do, the neighboring communities of Greenport and Sag Harbor have many additional options.
Shelter Island is only accessible by ferry from Greenport (North Ferry) or Sag Harbor (South Ferry), unless you’re coming by private boat or seaplane. Both ferries allow cars, and it’s about a 10-minute ride. The ferries do NOT run all night, so keep that in mind if you don’t plan to stay overnight.
