Welcome to Water Mill! If you’re visiting the Hamptons, this small hamlet has a lot to offer for those who love nature, arts, culture and historic mansions. Water Mill is known for its quaint feel, featuring picturesque farmland, scenic vistas and of course beautiful beaches. It’s a great area to explore if you need a break from the hustle and bustle of other Hamptons destinations. There’s plenty to explore, including art museums, restaurants and outdoor activities. And, if you need even more, other popular destinations are just a short drive away in the Town of Southampton and surrounding communities.
Water Mill is a small hamlet located within the Town of Southampton, NY, on the “South Fork” of Long Island. The first watermill in the state of New York is said to have been built here in 1644, which is how the area got its name. As a hamlet, Water Mill is bordered by several bodies of water, including Mecox Bay and several creeks and coves, in addition to the Atlantic Ocean. That provides a lot of opportunities for fun water activities. Water Mill is one of the wealthiest hamlets in the United States and is home to several A-list celebrities. But don’t let that stop you from exploring. Water Mill is a peaceful destination that offers visitors a unique blend of history, culture and natural beauty. Whether you're interested in exploring the area's rich history, enjoying its scenic vistas or simply relaxing on the beach, Water Mill is a great place to visit.
Water Mill’s most popular beaches include Flying Point Beach and W. Scott Cameron Beach. Further down on Flying Point Road is a beach referred to as “The Cut” (where the bay cuts into the ocean). The tides form small water pools that are especially fun (and safe) for small children! Outside of Water Mill, popular beaches include Cooper’s Beach in Southampton and Mecox Beach in Bridgehampton.
In addition to the ocean, there are several other nearby spots offering a variety of water activities, including fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding. Places to check out include Mill Pond, Mecox Bay and Peconic River (a short drive from Water Mill).
Several of Water Mill’s best restaurants are located right along Montauk Highway (Rt. 27). Be sure to try the incredible seafood, which Water Mill is known for!
There aren’t many hotels directly within Water Mill (one option is the Shou Sugi Ban House) – but popular options nearby include The Southampton Inn and the 5-star Topping Rose House in East Hampton.
A must for art lovers, this museum features more than 3,000 works of art, with a focus on local artists.
